Accidentally deleting a file from your cloud storage can be stressful, especially if you've already emptied the trash bin. However, most cloud providers have hidden "safety nets" that allow you to retrieve your data. Here is how to recover your files from the most popular cloud services.
1. Google Drive: The Admin Method
If you are using a Google Workspace account (for business or school), your administrator can often recover deleted items for up to 25 days after the trash is emptied.
Pro Tip: Contact your IT admin immediately. They can use the Google Admin Console to restore data specifically for your user account.
For Personal Accounts: Contacting Google Support via the "Help" menu can sometimes work if the file was deleted recently.
2. Microsoft OneDrive: Second-Stage Recycle Bin
OneDrive is unique because it has a two-stage deletion process.
If you don't see your file in the standard Recycle Bin, scroll to the bottom and click on the "Second-stage recycle bin."
For Microsoft 365 users, you can use the "Restore your OneDrive" feature to roll back all actions that occurred in the last 30 days—very useful for recovering from ransomware.
3. iCloud: The Web Recovery Tool
Apple allows you to recover files directly from the web interface:
Go to iCloud.com and sign in.
Navigate to Data Recovery (at the bottom of the page).
Select Restore Files. Here, you can see files deleted within the last 30 days that are no longer in your "Recently Deleted" folder on your iPhone or Mac.
